Modelling biomass-based value webs in Ethiopia
The three day workshop was held at the Jupiter Hotel in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and was organized by the Center for Development Research (ZEF), CONSIDEO and the Environment and Coffee Forest Forum (ECFF).
The main goal of the workshop was to identify in a participatory manner the steps, factors, drivers and links in a biomass value web by means of a systems analysis. The analysis of the value chains and value web provides an input for a systems modelling approach and it is carried out with the innovative software iMODELER . A detailed outline of actors, links amongst the actors, available infrastructure, constraints in the value chains of maize, enset, and bamboo production over time will lead to quantitative analyses of the value web systems. Moreover, the comprehensive description of various input factors will help to plan the further steps for research focusing on food security. To achieve this, the workshop brought together experts on maize, bamboo and enset to build a comprehensive model.
Participants were experts of the Jimma Farmers’ Cooperative Union, the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, the Anno Agro-industry P.L.C., Oromia Seed Enterprises (OSE), Oromia Output Market Enterprises (OOME), the Environment and Coffee Forest Forum (ECFF), Oromia Cooperative Promotion Agency, Ethiopia Commodity Exchange, the Center for Development Research (ZEF) and Consideo.
